Finding an DJ Agent or Agency

Having an Agent is very important if you’re trying to expand as a club DJ. In this chapter you will learn how to find yourself an agent that specializes in DJs, and how to create a profitable relationship with that agent. A DJ agency’s job is to find work for you, so you can concentrate on what you do best as a DJ. The agent works to sell your talents to clubs, concert venues, and promoters. In return, the agent receives a cut of your fee.  Usually 10%-20% of the booking fee charged to the nightclub or event promoter. The more work your agent finds you, the more money you both make.

But finding a DJ agent is much harder than if you were an actor or band.  This is because demand for DJs is much smaller than these other professions. Sure, there are all kinds of clubs hiring DJs, but most are too small to worry about having your own agent.  Agents help DJs get the really big gigs.  Events that cater to thousands of people.  Events with big talent budgets. These events are the only ones with big enough booking fees to make the agent’s cut worthwhile.

Unless you are one of the most famous DJs in a major city, you will have a hard time getting a professional DJ agency like AM-Only taking you seriously. They get thousands of requests a week from no-name DJs all over the world. Unless you can bring something to the table that other people can't (like a well known brand name and a following of thousands of people), you're out of luck.

No professional agent is going to spend a week trying to land you a gig at a dinky little club either, only to receive 20% of a $300 DJ fee.  It’s just not going to happen. That measly $60 is really not worth the time involved. Please remember that this industry is a business. All of you "It should only be about the music" people need to grow up a little. All of us had that mentality at one time, but if you want to make DJing a career, you have to think like a business person. It can still be about the music, but it should also be about the money. Otherwise it's just a hobby. Maybe you'll work for free once in a while because you love what you do, but no one else in this business is going to do that. Certainly not an agent.

But don’t get discouraged if you’re not famous enough for the bigger events and professional agencies.  There is another way.

There is another type of agent that can get you regular gigs at the smaller clubs & parties, and the incentives for this person to do a great job and give you steady DJ work are high.  These are the people you should be searching for, and networking with. This relationship is how many of the top DJs got to where they are today, including myself. It’s one of the first steps on your way to eventually working with a professional DJ agency, which can land you the REALLY big DJ jobs. I'm going to teach you how to find these people and create profitable relationships for the both of you...

Thanks so much for making this guide JP. I can't wait to start using your advice. I can already tell that I should have been doing this stuff all along, and I'm so happy I bought this. You can use this as a review on your site if you want.
